SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - A Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy sophomore has won the Congressional App Challenge for an app she created that could help detect polyps from colonoscopy images and videos.

Congressman Dan Kildee’s office made the announcement on Monday, Dec. 9.

Diya Ramakrishnan created the app PolypDetect, which won the Congressional App Challenge for Michigan’s 8th District, Kildee’s office said, adding the app uses a machine learning model to detect abnormal tissue growths from colonoscopy images and videos. These growths are typically linked to severe health conditions like cancer or ulcerative colitis

“As a cancer survivor, I understand the importance of early detection,” said Kildee. “Apps like PolypDetect have the potential to save lives and mitigate health conditions for many people. I am truly inspired by the incredible talent in our district and appreciate all the students who challenged themselves to find modern solutions to improve our community.”

Kildee’s office said Diya’s name, app image, app name, and congressional district will be featured in a rotating electronic display in the tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol Building for a year alongside the winners from other districts across the country.
